Do You Need a Computer Desk with Hutch?

By: Joanne Dorin

When looking for a computer desk with hutch or a large work station, you'll have many to choose from and many decisions to make. These desks range from under $100 to well into the thousands of dollars. Depending on what you're looking for, you are sure to find the exact style, material and size of desk you want. These desks can be found in child sizes, average sized desks, or extra large sectional desks which work great for large offices. Computer desks that offer a matching hutch are usually placed against a wall, but also available are corner desks with a hutch. If you purchase an L-shaped computer desk, the section of desk with the hutch can always be placed against the wall while the lower section can extend into the room.

If you plan on letting your hutch style desk stand in the center of an office, make sure that the back of the hutch is in a finished product. Many times manufacturers assume you will place a hutch against a wall and the back of the desk and hutch will not be seen. A less expensive wood or thick board is often used as backing and is not as nice to view and sometimes does not even match the finish of the furniture. When looking for the perfect computer desk with hutch, take a walk around the desk to see all views before making your decision on which desk to buy.

Computer desks are offered in many styles, from a country style roll top desk to a modern and contemporary glass and metal desk. Think about who will be using the desk, what other furniture is in the room, how much space you will need and what features you are looking for. Do you need two filing cabinets that slide under the desk? Will you need space for two to sit at the desk? Is there a space for a printer and fax machine? Also make sure there is adequate space on the hutch. It's amazing how roomy they look until you start loading them up with disks, paperwork, and computer speakers. How tall of a hutch did you want? Will it obstruct anyone's view? And most important, how much did you want to spend?

Once you've decided on the main features needed of a computer desk with hutch, start thinking about the style you'd like. Is there a certain wood type that you prefer? It's best to look over any desk you are considering at the office furniture store. This way you can see if the desk is truly all oak, or are parts of the desk made of pressed board. Many times the back of the desk, the inside of drawers and the back of the hutch are made of particle board. Expect the price to be higher for a true oak desk without any pressed board features. Also realize that an oak desk will be much heavier and harder to move around the office. Check to see if the hutch is easily removable. This can make moving your desk much easier. Simply remove the hutch, then place your desk where you'd like it, and replace the hutch.

Look for special features on your computer desk with hutch. Often you'll find that a hutch has a secret compartment to keep valuables or important papers out of reach and out of eyesight. Drawers with locks that take a key are often offered. Filing drawers that are ready for files and keyboard drawers built in are featured. When purchasing your desk, ask about shipping. Many companies will offer free shipping within their local area. It's always best to check stores close to your home or office.
