Hewlett Packard Compaq Presario V4000 Notebook - If you are looking for a great buy in a laptop this is it. Great price and performance starting at around $750.00 with the rebate. The $750.00 Presario V4000 has the 1.3 GHz Intel Celeron M processor and 256 DDR memory which is pretty basic, but you can add 512MB easily. It has a widescreen display measuring 15.4” which is good for DVD watching and you can upgrade to the Brightview screen for around $25 which gives you better contrast and brightness control.

Video memory is shared onboard so not a great machine for gaming but certainly a good choice for general home and business use. Basic hard drive is 40GB and can be upgraded. It comes with a combination DVD-ROM and CD-RW drive, 2 USB port, a modem, and a network card.

Fujitsu Lifebook N6100 Portable Computer - The 17” monitor on the laptop is perfect watching DVDs and the inner workings are pretty impressive too providing excellent performance. The basic model starts you out with a 1.86 GHz Intel Pentium M Processor and 512 MB of 522 MHz DDR2 memory which can be upgraded to 2 GB. Come standard with an 80 GB drive and you can upgrade to 100 GB drive if you need the extra space. 24X/10X/24X CD-RW DVD Rom combination is standard equipment.

Complete with 2 USB ports, a firewire port and an SD/XD memory stick slot and an express card slot. Built in wireless communication as well as standard modem and network interface. Because of the extra size for the screen the keyboard accommodates a 10 key keypad to the side of the full size keyboard. The only problem with this machine is its’ size makes it nearly 10 pounds and that can’t be considered a light weight laptop. The onboard video may not be sufficient for 3D gaming or large graphic manipulation.

Gateway NX200 Portable Computer

This little gem weight just over 5 pounds and packs a powerful punch in the light notebook category. The low start price makes it a great choice. Base machine comes with 1.4GHz Celeron M processor, 256 MHz memory and a 50 GB hard drive. Good starting point but if you need more don’t bother upgrading this machine. To costly, rather step up to the NX200S. Combination optical drive provides you with DVD 24X/10X/24X CD-RW all in one drive. The four in one media card reader is also included and allows for easy transfer of your photos and files from your PD or digital camera. The only problem is the light 90 day warranty which is pretty basic.

Dell OptiPlex SX Series

This system crosses the benefits of a desktop with the convenience of a laptop with its ultra small box. It can be attached to the bottom of a desk or a wall and it comes with the mounting plate. You just need to buy the mounting bracket. Comes with 2 USB ports on the front and 4 USB ports on the back, Ethernet card for networking, and you can add the optional wireless network. This 3.2 GHz Pentium 4 processor packs a powerful punch and it can be upgraded to 2 GB of DDR memory. Its draw back is it will only take a 20GB or 40GB hard drive but you can add a removable hard drive in the modular bay.

The audio and video systems are integrated and you can connect your headphone or microphone on the front port. Because the on board video is not upgradeable, this system however is not designed for heavy graphical work like CAD. This is an excellent compact powerful system.

Gateway S5000 Desktop Computer

This Gateway targets the small business market and is for those who what a high performance system that doesn’t also have a high price tag attached. It starts around $400 for their basic machine. The entry level processor is a 2.66 GHz Celeron D CPU with 256 MB of 533 MHz DD2 memory that you can upgrade if you need. From there the system speeds go all the way up to 2.93 GHz.

Comes with a 40GB hard drive and you can upgrade to an 80GB for $10 so definitely worth the upgrade. Combination DVD-ROM 20X/48X CD-RW, but no floppy drive. Two USB ports on the front, Ethernet card but no modem. Graphics and audio are integrated and video shares the main memory which shouldn’t be an issue in an office environment.
