Salon Reception Desk: What Every Salon Needs

By: Joanne Dorin

A desk is a great way to hold material such as folders, papers, and envelopes. However, a reception desk is a specialty desk that has a different set of responsibilities. A receptionist desk is responsible for greeting people as well as seating a receptionist. A good example of a receptionist desk is a salon receptionist desk. These come in various sizes and shapes. However, they all contain a public appearance: this is what people see when they enter the salon; this desk has a private side where a receptionist usually sits.

There are many styles of these fine desks and different salons will have different needs and wants. For example, some are more modern and sophisticated; other desks may be antique and elegant. Of course, these range in size from an all-encompassing desk that encircles the receptionist area; then they get small enough that they look like a simple podium.

Heritage makes a salon reception desk that is a marvelous example of an all-encompassing desk. The chairwell is 48 inches wide; the welcoming side is a beautiful, wooden five panel design. I like to say it is an octagon shape because the first panel is in front and the others taper to cover the sides leaving a receptionist area. You can purchase a model of this desk that will house two receptionists, however the default only seats one. This has a huge amount of storage space! There is a locking, security cash drawer with a cash till, storage cabinets galore, and adjustable shelving units. These can be specially ordered for a modest additional cost and of course, a bit of extra time. They say you can get the basic design for around a modest $4,500 USD.

The Bradford Concierge Desk is a great example of a salon reception desk. This is a stark contrast to the Heritage Desk. Indeed, this is 42 inches high by 24 inches wide and about 24 inches deep. I like to say it looks like a podium. This is a greet, affordable way to greet guests and the locking cash drawer makes for an easily made reception area. The front is slightly raised from the receptionist end. There is a storage cabinet beneath the cash drawer. This is a bargain at around $800 USD.

Of course, there are other fine examples of salon receptionist desks, but they all share one quality: a salon reception desk has a higher greeting end to make a separator from the guest and the receptionist. The desk can have a place for a computer, a till, and/or monitors and cash boxes. Usually, a reception desk will have a cash drawer that locks and has a till inside. Almost all receptionist desks can be customized to suit the need of the salon. Since some salons have a greater need for a receptionist than others.

These salon reception desks are a great way to give that customer the first impression of the salon or parlor. Although these do tend to be pricey, they will increase your business and make for greater customer satisfaction.
